Habitat for Humanity of Polk County

Habitat for Humanity of Polk County is a Christian ministry dedicated to ending substandard housing and building strong communities in Polk County, Texas. We partner with local businesses, faith communities, community organizations, cities, and volunteers to build simple, decent homes that are sold to qualified families for closing costs, a small down payment, and a 20-year no-interest mortgage.

Habitat for Humanity of Polk County was affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International on April 1, 2003. We started our first home, in Livingston, in December of that year, and the homeowner occupied the house in March 2004. Since then we have built eight more homes - one in Onalaska, one in the unincorporated area of the county, one in Moscow, and five in Livingston.

Families and individuals qualifying for a Habitat home in Polk County earn no more than 60 percent of the median family income for Polk County. Currently, the median income for a family of four in Polk County is $43,250. Therefore, a family of four can qualify for a Habitat home if their total family income does not exceed $25,860. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, age, sex,  marital status, color, religion, national origin, receiving public assistance, or has in good faith exercised rights under the Consumer Credit Protection Act.

Habitat for Humanity of Polk County is an all-volunteer organization with no paid employees at this time. We are a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization under the umbrella of Habitat for Humanity International. We are incorporated in the State of Texas.

Our board of directors is multi-ethnic and represents a wide range of ages of community-minded citizens dedicated to Habitat’s mission.

Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller with the mission of eliminating poverty housing across the world, one house at a time. Since that time, over 300,000 homes have been built in over 100 countries, providing simple, decent shelter for over one million people. Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry, founded on the principals enunciated by our Lord, Jesus Christ. Although those who benefit from our ministry and those who participate in the ministry do not have to be Christians, we ask only that they do not interfere with our Christian mission to provide decent shelter for all of God’s people in need.
